Meet the District Governor 2016-2017



Yavuz Atila is a current member, founder, and Charter President of the Rotary Club of Monterey Cannery Row, since March 2012.  He joined Rotary in April 2005 as a member of the Rotary Club of Monterey Peninsula Sunrise and served as the President in 2010-11 and Assistant Governor for Territory 2 in 2011-12.

He founded the annual “Foundation Luncheon” in November 2010 to bring the Rotary Clubs on the Monterey Peninsula together to celebrate the END POLIO NOW campaign.  In June 2009, he founded the STAR (Silicon Valley Turkish American Rotary) Club in Sunnyvale. He attended the Leadership Monterey Peninsula Class of 2013 and started a joint Rotary project called “Ocean for Youth” to help schools to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Monterey Bay. Yavuz is a Paul Harris Society (PHS) Member, multiple Paul Harris Fellow (PHF+8), Sustaining Member, and EREY.

Yavuz was born on April 4, 1962 in Duragan/Sinop, Turkey. His family moved to Istanbul in 1973 and he graduated from the Turkish Naval Academy in 1984. During his 8-year Navy career, he served on Turkish frigates that operated in the Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea.  In December 1990, he received his M.S. degree from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey.  After resigning from the Turkish Navy in 1992, he moved back to Monterey and worked as the Information Systems Director for the Center for Nonproliferation Studies at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. In 2003, he founded his own IT consulting company, Monterey Bay Technologies, Inc.

Yavuz is married to Nurten Atila, who works for Union Bank as a branch manager.  Nurten was a member of the Rotary Club of Monterey Pacific until 2012 and is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow (PHF+1).  Yavuz and Nurten have two daughters, Merve and Ekin.  Both daughters are Paul Harris Fellows.
